P2P Clients
Peer to peer software is being used by millions of people around the world to transmit and exchange data including videos, music, books, and applications. The idea behind P2P networks is to use connectivity between participants in a network, and the cumulative bandwidth of network participants. This is a completely different system than a conventional centralized server, which provides the core value to the service. This is one of the main reasons why P2P software became so popular in the recent years. Currently, the largest P2P network is Gnutella, but BitTorrent is steadily rising. When it comes to applications Limewire is the most popular one amounting to 35% of users, and on the second place is uTorrrent with around 25% of users. While the media might want people to believe that peer to peer networks are primarily used for illegal file transfers, there are also a lot of legal files being shared among users. Actually, anything that is not copyrighted has the potential to be shared by millions of users around the world. Artists and writers who are not popular yet, may wish to distribute their work for free, so that they will eventually gain recognition if their work is appreciated by others.
