Saving Power with Screensavers
There are many beautiful screensavers on the market, and they portray many things such as a sea, forest, animals, mountains, and almost anything you can think about. A lot of them are free, so no wonder that they gained on popularity. Almost all computers have some sort of screensaver installed, besides the default ones installed along Windows. Most screensavers are visually appealing, and I am not going to question that. However, I am rather going to question whether they can really save you any power. Many people use them because they think that their electricity bill will be lower, but using a colorful screensaver can definitely use a lot of power. That is because your monitor is still running, and your graphic card has to generate graphics. If you are serious about reducing your bills, you should rather allow the monitor to go blank after a period of time. This is the best way to reduce power usage, and screensavers are not going to help much. If you are a laptop user, you may want to reduce the backlight brightness, as it is by far the biggest power consumer in many laptops. This way even if you leave your screensaver running, at least it is not going to use that much power. Switching your computer to standby mode is also a good idea if you want to reduce power usage.
